| To measure for the overlay for your edition, I'll need two measurements of the paper block (the interior pages not inluding the book hardcover or dust jacket). The height of the paper block can simply be measured with your ruler as normal. The width will need a slightly different method, as the overlays may not sit completely within the paper block due to the glue of the page signatures. (see gap in photo) |
| Step 1: Grab a sheet of paper. Tuck the paper into the book on the page you want to place the overlay. Make sure there is a good amount of excess paper extending beyond each edge. |
| Step 2: Close the book tight against the paper, then taking your finger nail or a credit card, fold over the excess paper to create a crease against the paper block on each of the three edges. |
| Step 3: Trim the excess from the creases you made to create the final overlay dimensions. (ignore the frayed edges in mine, my blade is awful) |
| Step 4: Place the trimmed sheet back into the book to confirm it sits flush. Test a few pages before and after your chosen page to make sure that it's sitting flush (sometimes the glue varies within a page signature). Trim off excess if it sticks out too much from these pages. A millimeter or two (or 1/16th inch) can make the difference. Measure the width of your paper template. This is your flush width measurement . |
